With Tom’s honest observations at its core, King Dork is novel in that it honors the central nerd by refusing to attribute easy YA conventions to him; for example, in any other book, Tom would find an ally in Holden Caulfield, rather than rolling his eyes at the “Catcher cult. Seth Gordon, director of The King of Kong: He’s persistently tormented by boys and humiliated by girlsand the teachers and administrators are little better. Tom Henderson, the King Dork, is a high school loser with only one friend, a whacko mother and step-father, and zero prospects on the female horizon. All the female characters seem alike moody, controlling, and bitchy. And somehow, he makes a few good friends, and he manages to meet a girl and they have interests in common, and they hang out.

I am pretty disturbed that so many reviewers are using the word “slut” to describe these characters in the same breath as ling word “feminism. A couple of months ago, I read a similar book called Miracle Wimp.

Other books in the series. Porttman book started out so strong, and so funny, I loved it. Though the main character and the author by extension mock Catcher in the Rye endlessly, the novel is clearly crafted from Salinger’s mold though with contemporary authenticity. A movie is being made based on this book. The band name does not appear anywhere on the outside packaging.


The narrator of kibg book is funny and engaging. He requested books for portma birthday, and I picked this one up at the University Bookstore in Seattle.
